Pura Review: Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu

Ever since Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu released, all I seem to be reading are replica reviews that call it a “coming of age” film. Basically, this is a new genre formed by the critics which our filmmakers are trying to take undue advantage of; better known as a fad. And the one filmmaker who is literally cashing out on this trend is none other than Karan Johar. So yes, he’s back in producer form with Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu which stars the very cool Kareena Kapoor and chocolate boy, (he’s yet to evade himself from that tag) Imran Khan. Naturally, it screams I Hate Luv Storys hangover simply because it possesses the same aura and vibe also known as cheese factor.

Welcome to Las Vegas where Rahul Kapoor (Imran Khan) lives a nine to five job courtesy of his commanding parents. On the flip side, there is the carefree and joshiley Riana Briganza (Kareena Kapoor) who lives in the moment. After a night of extreme drunkenness, they get married ala Vegas style. The duo find themselves in each others company while they file for an annulment and a deep friendship forms. Very quickly, Rahul falls in pyar, ishq, mohabbat for Riana who is not ready for any kind of relationship. However, he does manage to change his rather “stiff uptight” ways in the company of Riana.

EMAET is not a coming of age film and if you had to pick a coming of age film from Karan Johar’s lot, it would have to be Wake Up Sid which fits the coming of age genre bill to the T. However, EMAET is a coming of age for Hindi films vis-à-vis the ending of the film which, by the way, leaves big time room for a sequel. It’s not the same shindig. No running into each others arms or sudden realization of love, but a rather mature ending to what is easily any of the two: a chick flick or a cheese fest. Look, EMAET is hardly path breaking cinema but you cannot deny that is a nice easy breezy film which works best on a Sunday afternoon. The plot is simple and fun with some funky young dialogues. Shakun Batra does well with her film and clearly has a good understanding of modern day love and relationships.

The film belongs to Kareena Kapoor. As Riana Briganza, she is funky, fun and fabulous in every which way. Barring her horrid hair – which is rather ironic as she plays an unemployed hairstylist, she literally becomes Riana. That said, this film and role must have been child’s play for Bebo especially since she has done a lot deeper substance filled roles in the past. Riana is not Geet from Jab We Met. With due respect to the latter film, Geet was more rural; Riana is urban. Where do I begin with Imran Khan. I’m not a fan and so by the end, I was literally pakaoed by his enactment of Rahul Kapoor. I’m not sure whether it was the role or the hair, but Imran didn’t work at all for me. In fact, I was more excited to see Ram Kapoor, who plays a rich tharki, in the two scenes he bagged. I think Imran believed EMAET would be his Wake Up Sid moment. And in a way he is right; this is a wake up Imran and smell the roses moment! Boman Irani and Ratna Pathak Shah are as usual superb; she more than him.

And now, the flaws. First the music. This is not Amit Trivedi’s best with the title track taking the crown and Aahatein a close second.  Then there are a few minor details which Shakun should have really cross-checked. For starters, how can a wannabe ballet dancer, who has a steel ball in her foot, dance like a diva in Auntyji? And then of course, there’s the hair issue. For a hairstylist, they really should have given her some gosh darn awesome hair. If anyone needed Vidal Sassoon, it was Riana Briganza.

Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu has been compared to Hollywood rom-coms but in all honesty, why should we do that? We are totally capable of making great Hindi romantic comedies as we have in the past. The film is time pass, paisa vasool even, but strictly that. If you need reasons to watch the film, well then go in if you’re looking for a short cutesy film. And of course, for Bebo. She actually uses the word, “anal” in the film. C’mon now, do you need any more reason?

100 Word Review: Mere Brother Ki Dulhan

Mere Brother Ki Dulhan has a plot that is self-explanatory. Brother finds bride for older brother and instead falls in love with her. With a happy sappy ending and some good music, the movie is yet another run-of-the-mill kinda shindig. Katrina fails and how, as the feisty Dimple Dixit. Imran Khan, who keeps on improving, appears rather squarish while Ali Zafar is plain blah. The plot itself is rather lackluster and very YashRaj. It loses steam fifteen minutes in because it is a bunch of romantic films clumped together. Watch MBKD for the music. Otherwise this one ain’t worth it.

P.S. It took me two real sit-downs to watch MBKD. I eventually completed it. Finally.

100 Word Review: Delhi Belly

Delhi Belly follows the life of three lads who through a bunch of mishaps land up on the hitlist of a local goon. As the film progresses, we play witness to a number of interesting characters, situations and dialogues par crass-excellence. DB is desi, funky and honest in its execution. It dares to be different with its language, sexual content and storyline. Performances by the entire cast has to be applauded while the writer and director of the film deserve heaps of praise as they’ve single-handedly changed the face and future of Hindi cinema. A cult film; a must watch.

I Love Delhi Belly (Like I Hate Those Who Didn't) - Brackets Mein

Like most of Youngistan, I too happily lapped up Delhi Belly. And I oddly caught the film later than most. I heard of some claiming it was rowdy, housed far too many crassy foul dialogues and was far too unconventional. Mind you, these were other fellow youthful folks who I believe should officially be given the Dada/Dadi tag after making such old school comments. I took immense pride in watching Imran Khan go "down" on Shenaz Treasurywala (since smooching and making out has been mastered by our stars), in the farting and burping and freakin' loved the foul crassy language that was used throughout. But what does this mean for Hindi cinema? Does it mean we are finally realizing that people use the word "chutiya" regularly? That is is indeed a part of our daily lingo? Are we also finally comprehending that, believe it or not, people in India are having sex? The youth are no longer hiding in the rocks of various beaches canoodling but actually on a bed indulging in sexual acts. Get with it; it's happening.

But what is it about Delhi Belly that has everyone talking and shocked? In my opinion, it's the honesty. Finally, our writers and directors are realizing that no longer is real love all flippant and frills. We love watching Kajol running through a field of daisies into the arms of one rather dreamy SRK, but we also know that it will never happen to us; the regular junta. We do know that we are more than likely to date a guy who curses and abuses, possibly struggling to grow in his career, drinks, smokes but will keep us satisfied in the sack. Hindi cinema, doesn't ever, or rarely allows us to see a more modern side to urban relationships. Delhi Belly does just that while being as entertaining as it can be.

I just don't understand why a small chunk of the population - youngin's too, are so shocked by the film. Are you seriously going to sit there and tell me you haven't heard any of the foul language used throughout the film or that you've never indulge/heard of oral sex? Spare me. If you haven't, I suggest you get the f@&k out of your shell dahlings. And you can sue me for using the F-word. It wasn't as though we saw a full frontal people; that ain't happening anytime soon especially since some viewers could barely handle this much vulgarity!  The music too is a step ahead of the rest; it too is controversial, funky and freaky-deaky. DK Bose is still running, on my iPod that is, while I'm totally down to "shaking my biscuit". All said, Delhi Belly is headed the cult route.

Personally, I loved the crass, the filth and the profanity. Delhi Belly has vastly improved my foul language bank which was in dire need of some help to throw at people (read: irritating annoying wannabes we-know-it-all-but-really-don't-know-crap-about-Bollywood Desi blondes) who never fail to irk me regularly. And then of course, praise the lord! We finally have our first oral sex scene. I'm a proud Bollywood fan today; how we've grown.

Delhi Belly portrays the future of modern Hindi cinema at its best. And if you find it too much or too hot to handle, stick to the classics.

Imran + Ranbir...KWK draws closer!

It's nearly that time of the week again when Koffee with Karan will take over your television screen for all of one hour. This week, its Ranbir Kapoor and Imran Khan who come together to create sparks. And you can be darn sure the duo are going to do just that!

Imran Khan ki Shaadi!

Imran Khan is on his way to breaking hearts come 2011 as he ties the knot with longtime girlfriend, Avantika Malik. The families have decided that January will be the month and in the midst of finalizing dates but rumors claim that I.K. is gearing up for a Big Fat Bollywood wedding. While the details are not being divulged and Imran is still running around shooting for various projects, he has sent close friends in the industry messages letting them know to ensure they are around come January. And once the wedding is complete, he will be back to work almost immediately.

Imran and Avantika have never hidden their relationship from the media or public eye and in fact, have been seen out and about at parties and so on. Imran will join his uncle Aamir Khan, who too married early, as he becomes one of the youngest romantic heroes to get hitched. The wedding will take place in Mumbai and as soon as details are revealed, you'll get it!

RK and IK on KWK!!

While Aish and Abhishek failed to WOW me on the opening episode of Koffee with Karan Season 3, (she giggled too much and he wasn't as fun as I thought he would be) I am convinced my favorite fella Ranbir Kapoor and not-so favorite Imran Khan will be far more entertaining. Between the two of them, they always manage to kick up a roar and one can only imagine the amount of mayhem they are going to cause on the show next week. Excited? Take a peek!

Koffee with Karan: Teaser and Details!

While Koffee with Karan, in my opinion, is just a number of stars sucking up to Karan Johar and vice versa, it doesn't fail to entertain. And despite the fact that it is not my favorite chat show (On the Couch with Koel, zindabad!), I will be catching every episode of season 3 because of the incredible jodi's that will join KJo on his couch for a cuppa joe. The episodes couples will include a directors special featuring Raj Kumar Hirani, Imtiaz Ali and Farah Khan while a separate episode will finally bring together the Devgns: Ajay and Kajol. Of course, Shah Rukh Khan will be seen with Gauri but in addition, Aamir will feature with his wifey Kiran Rao all in time for Dhobi Ghat. Then we will have a heartthrob episode which will bring buddies, Imran Khan and Ranbir Kapoor - hubba hubba! And then, rivals-now-friends Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor will grace the couch. Of course, Karan has gone on to say that the boys are not rivals, and if they are, they are the "coolest rivals" he's ever seen. Touche. As for the girls, they were apparently super "relaxed" with one another. But first up, Abhishek and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. The couple apparently talk all things about their marriage and their grand wedding. Check out the teaser below!

Imran: Thanda Thanda Chemistry!

Is it me or does Imran Khan not have the capability to romance onscreen? He always appears incredibly cold and fearful of his leading ladies. The only one he managed to look somewhat in love with was Genelia D'Souza in Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. Beyond that, he has looked hardly in love with his heroines or the script of the film even. He made a fool of himself when Minnisha Lamba was seducing him in Kidnap; looked far too friendish with Shruti Hassan in Luck and don't even get me started on the brother-sister vibe he shared with Sonam Kapoor in I Hate Luv Storys. Eek and cringe! So now, if that wasn't enough discomfort, he is ready to attempt and light up the screen with Katrina Kaif in Mere Brother Ki Dulhan. And then to take it further, he has to romance the rather lanky and tall Deepika Padukone in Break Ke Baad. Erm...if Neil Nitin Mukesh couldn't work it with Deepika, I honestly doubt Imran will be able to. Take a look at the first looks of both films and tell me you don't feel another bhai-bahen wala pyar coming on. Yuck!

Zero Dinero!

In this day and age, where Bollywood celebs are constantly fighting to be the number one and vying to be the highest paid actors, we find that some (very few) actors actually are generous enough to take on films with absolutely no to little pay. Check it out.

Bipasha Basu: The actress forgoed any amount of remuneration for her role in Lamhaa

Shahid Kapoor: When it came to his minuscle role in Paathshala, Shahid said no to any form of payment as he wanted the film to reach out to people.

Akshay Kumar: Believe it or not, Khiladi Kumar, who is known for charging immense amounts of money for his films, is taking absolutely nothing for Tees Maar Khan which is also co-producing.

John Abraham: No money was taken by John for Aashayein.

Imran Khan: As a thank you to uncle Aamir, Imran has taken nothing for Delhi Belly.

Salman Khan: The uber generous Salman Khan always does it free for his family. He charged nothing for Atul Agnihotri's Hello and friend Saawan Kumar for his film Love - The Love Season.

Shah Rukh Khan: And lastly, SRK, an actor who does nothing for free, actually worked on Bhootnath for zero paisa!

Break Ke Baad ...

Sorry folks! Been super busy for a few weeks and haven't had a minute to update. Believe me, I missed you as much as much as you've missed me. But no more disappearing act. Vaada raha!

Figured I'd do some quick one-liners to update you Bollywood lovers with news that has been making news.

Priyanka Chopra claims her tears are real on Fear Factor 3: Khatron Ke Khiladi and she genuinely felt bad for the men who were evicted on the show.

Ameesha Patel has taken it upon herself to give best bud Manyata Dutt her baby shower after she is expecting twins!

Jacqueline Fernandes has claimed she would like to work with Abhay Deol.

Imran Khan is holidaying in Amsterdam and is getting ready to work with Deepika Padukone in the coming weeks on Break Ke Baad.

And the biggest news yet! Konkona Sen Sharma and Ranvir Shorey tied the knot! Yes, and the only celebs that were present were wedding were Fardeen Khan and Shilpa Shetty. Here's wishing two of my favorites the best years to come.

Kapoor Khandan Update

Check it out. Apparently, after basking in the success of Slumdog Millionaire. Of course you are, Slumdog is plain boring now. Come to think of it, I never really understood why there was so much hoopla over it anyway. Read: boring and over rated.

Oh and another Kapoor close to Anil, Sonam that is, has rejected her co-stars, Abhay, Imran and Ranbir as potential life partners. She may be a fashionista but the actress is not afraid to let her co-stars know that they really don't fit the bill. "I would never date a guy who works in films like me. We would then end up discussing movies most of the time and that would get boring eventually. Also, if he works in films, he would remind me of my dad!" she was heard saying.

And when it came to her co-stars, she went on to claim, "They are not my kind. I want someone who is intelligent and caring." Wow. Is she implying that the likes of Abhay, Imran and Ranbir are not smart or sweet?

Imran + Kareena = Size Zero Again!

Over the weekend, I got to see the 2010 IIFA Awards and was impressed (and happy) with Kareena Kapoor's new beautiful body. She has finally realized that she needs to shed the slim-jim size zero look for a more healthier frame. Thank goodness for that because she looks like a million bucks! It was like seeing my favorite Bebo back to her usual awesome sexy yet cute self. And then today, I get to read news of Karan Johar "demanding" her to head back to her skinny look. Reason? Well, for those of you who don't know, one of KJo's upcoming film stars Kareena Kapoor along with Imran Khan. Convinced, that a more skinny Kareena will look better or more "compatible" as he has put it, with Khan.

It was because of boyfriend Saif Ali Khan, who expressed his dislike for the actresses boney figure and thus, Bebo decided to head back to her healthier lifestyle and body. And believe me, if you did see Bebo dance at the awards, she did look mighty healthy and pretty. So why on earth KJo would make such a disgusting demand, is beyond my understanding. I actually think the actress would look better if she was healthier even if its with Imran Khan.

Hopefully, Bebo will tell KJo to take a hike and not indulge in such a silly demand. Are you listening Bebo?

Two Khans, A Johar and an Octopus!

Lots of fun things going on in Tinseltown today. In fact, so many things that I decided to include a few sentences on all the top stories today! Something a bit more brief yet entertaining I promise. Chale? Chalo!

So, Imran Khan is apparently the new gay icon in India. Post IHLS and his open shirt hoopla, the gay community has taken an instant liking to IK. Gay Bombay apparently contacted Dharma Productions and requested a special screening. Dharma was estactic and agreed. In fact, Imran attended the screening and interacted with his gay, literally and figuratively speaking, fans.

Salman Khan has chosen Deepika Padukone over girlfriend Katrina Kaif for the Hindi remake of the South film Bodyguard. No real reason has been given except that Sallu and director Atul Agnihotri, were looking for a fresh face to go with Salman. Interesting baat, Salman and Katrina haven't worked together since a debacle better known as Yuvraaj. Just saying.

I'm uberly utterly excited! Koffee With Karan will be making a comeback this September and I am overjoyed. Look, I don't love the show for the content but I do love watching Karan Johar sucking up to the stars and vice versa. I love the boring sweet questions and the diplomatic answers. I love the Manish Malhotra clothes. Yes, I'm excited! But before the season begins, Karan will be hosting a special show with Kajol and Kareena Kapoor all in time for We Are Family. That should be fun!

And lastly, my buddy, Paul the Octopus is still in the news! Apparently, a Madrid zoo wants to adopt the eight-legged creature. Oh the life of a famous Octopus is so hard!

P.S. If you haven't heard the music of Aisha, I suggest you do! While I'm not a Sonam Kapoor fan, I do love the music of her upcoming film. Why should I hold the music makers responsible for a bratty star child. A must hear!

Shobhaa De: You Go Girl!

I don't care what anyone calls Shobhaa De, she is what she is: honest. More recently, I have acquired an immense amount of respect for the well-known writer. She wasn't afraid to call a spade, a spade when she ousted Punit Malhotras DUMB love story. But little did she know that she would be humiliated by Punit Malhotra and Sonam Kapoor after they read her review of the film. Besides calling her a "fossil" who "wasn't getting any" which actually not only told critics that you weren't allowed to call out a film, i.e. do your job but also showed viewers how disgusting Punit Malhotra really is.

While I completely advocated for the lady here, I was thrilled to bits when she came out in her own defense condemning Punit Malhotra and the likes of him. Its a fab read! Oh and to top it off, Sonam Kapoor came out with a half-ass apology to Mrs. De -- you can ignore my politically correct media bite. Good publicity on your part Sonam, considering Aisha is on the brink of release and you desperately need a genuine hit to your name.

Ohhh and there is a new Twitter war between Rajeev Masand and Amitabh Bachchan. More on that tomorrow after I do some investigation!  What is up with the Bollywood clan using Twitter as a base for war? How childish.

On a side note, Octopus Baba, as he has been christened in India, has proven that he is the new almighty psychic. The Spaniards took gold last night making them FIFA Champs 2010. Viva Espana folks!

I Hate Love Luv Shove Storys! The "Real" Review

I Hate Luv Storys, which needs the byline, "A confused state of minds and hearts" is officially my least favorite love, sorry luv, whatever, romantic film. From the get-go one could tell that this film is dedicated to Imran Khan's fans -- female and male. Sonam Kapoor basically loiters around like pretty props and Punit Malhotra, Karan Johar wannabe, attempts to create a film that is pathbreaking. Fail. I don't want to get into the details of the plot and so on, if you want one of "those" reviews, look here. For the life of me, cannot understand why Malhotra would mock fun at classic love stories in a film which he most likely intended to be just that. For starters, it lacks a couple who has zing and chemistry, yes yet again that overused word appears. When you think back to romantic films which starred new pairs, Juhi-Aamir, Shah Rukh-Kajol, Madhuri-Anil, you saw some serious chemistry, biology, physics! The works. Imran and Sonam lack that quality. In fact, they look anything but attracted to each other. In the film, Khan tells Sonam at one point, "I never looked at you that way. You're just a friend." Rightly said Imran. Keep your relationship to friendship on and off screen.

The problem with IHLS is it basically lacks direction in the film. It goes back and forth between both characters realizing they are in love, wait, not they're not. Oh wait, yes they are. Hello! Are you or aren't you? This very back-and-forth of their feelings really began to get incredibly frustrating. And then, the music wasn't placed correctly. In the first half, they come one after the other. In the second half, they are bit more spread out but again so repetitive. Complete injustice done to Vishal-Shekhar who have easily come out with one of the best albums of 2010. In terms of choreography, the title song is fun while Sadka Kiya is yet another sari-sweater-scenic number. Typical. Blah.

As a director, Punit looks far too much like a wannabe Karan Johar. He has the new millennium Johar written all over him. If you're a K-Jo fan, this is great news. If you're not...well then, no comments. Even parts of the script have the Dharma Prod. stamp print. Post Dostana, Johar can't come away from the Gay innuendos. You will find a few in IHLS. Yes, for some reason, this is a popular subject in the Dharma camp. Ahem. The movie talks about how cliched and non-realistic Hindi romantic films are. And away from the set scenes, it houses a number of over the top cliched scenes. The mother-son break down scene is one prime example.

Okay performances. Imran tries soooooooooooo hard. Yes, that hard. And you know what, it wasn't bad. I actually liked him in this film. The film is basically centered on him. IHLS = Imran Khan. Sonam is well, typical Sonam. Okay, maybe she improved by a fraction but even then, nothing award worthy. Nothing about the film screams awards by the way. As a pair, this one should be refrained. Do not repeat. Her clothes should be repeated though. She looked fresh and radiant to her advantage. Sameer Dattani got on my nerves which is rather sad since he is pretty talented. The dude who played Kunal, Imran's sidekick was awesome! He wore some great tee's, drew up some fab graphs on love and women and was pretty darn funny.

Listen, IHLS is not path-breaking. It doesnt make you think about love and I definitely do prefer my classic Hindi films over this supposedly modern day flick. Its chicky and if you fit in the age bracket of 16 to the mushy-gushy type, then this is your pick for the month. But take my word, listen to the songs and create better love stories of your own.

I think I'll sit and watch Maine Pyar Kiya again tonight. Yes, its cheesy but at least it was allowed in the eighties. Over and out.

Khan is King

Day after day, we are treated to reading punchlines from Shah Rukh Khan who takes quick jabs at Aamir, who, in turn does the same, followed by the non-stop feuds that SRK has with Salman Khan. While it's every Khan for himself, each of these Khans believe that they are kings, ace and rulers of the Hindi film industry. Ultimately, I have come to concur that they are not helping their individual reputations but instead, ruining it more so by talking about one another in a most derogative manner. The fans are bored, and the media have a hay day publicizing their vile comments. But question is, who is King Khan?

In my opinion, the throne belongs to Feroz Khan. I honestly believe that when he reads of all the Khans battling it out in the media and chuckles to himself. How can any of the contemporary Khans even believe they can match up to his grandeur or stature that he still exhibits? Till date the actor par excellence stands for style and modernity. In the past, his movies had been considered ahead of its time but the actor has never been one to toot his own horn. Ahem. I do hope the wannabe "King Khans" are listening. Known for helping co-stars, appreciating his subordinates and moreover Feroz Khan does not take cheap jabs at actors. Yes, he has had his share of controversial events regarding films, plots, scenes and songs. However, he has managed to come out on top and ever so graceful. This Khan is currently unwell however, and I wish him a speedy recovery.

From the newbies, I guess the only Khan that may take over the Khan regime is Imran Khan. This is merely due to the fact that he has right last name to help him. He still does need to prove himself as an actor if you ask me. I think that the only actor from the new lot who will actually make it huge, is Farhan Akhtar. The dude is a Rock Star and everyone knows the headbangers are the ones who bring in the crowds. Jokes apart, he is humble and so gracious. Too bad he doesn't have the last name which tends to reign supreme.

The Khans can continue to fight it out and continue to look silly if you ask me. Soon some other Khan (Saif, Fardeen and Zayed are all viable possibilities), will creep up behind them and steal their thunder. I'm waiting for that one. Until then, F.K, that's Feroz Khan to you, is bestowed with the honor of being deemed King Khan. K(h)an't say more than that.
