100 Word Review: Don 2

Don 2 picks off right where it leaves us. And as predictable as it may sound, a heist is planned in which Don brings in his old enemies and new friends. There’s action, sexual tension and awesome dialogues. Don 2 is stylish (kudos Farhan) but it really lacks meat. SRK redeems himself big time post Ra.One—he is Don in every which way. Priyanka kicks butt well but seems far too turned on in her scenes with SRK. Kunal, Lara, Boman, Aly are all simply apt. Sadly, Farhan’s unique style is somewhat lost. This one is for diehard SRK fans.

SRK Goes Bobblehead for Don 2!

So you know how when a film is on the brink of release and how we get games and insane merchandise thrown at us which most of the time we just mock? Yeah, well fear not. With Don 2, you’re in for a bit of a treat. Instead of the usual hoopla, you have to check out this Shah Rukh Khan, in his Don 2 avatar, Bobblehead! Tell me you’re not psyched! As much as I ain’t a SRK fan, I can’t help but dig this fabulous way of promotion. And who better, I guess, than SRK to be the first Indian bobblehead.

Okay so, its limited edition and the brainchild of one very savvy Sohal Khatwani. While I was bowled over by his great innovation, you can expect a lot more bobbleheads from Khatwani in the future as he intends on creating more bobbleheads for stars, cricketers and of course, our “favorite” politicians. And if you’re looking to get your own bobblehead for wedding cakes, quirky giveaways and so on, contact Sohal for more details. He’s your man with a whole range of ideas which sound super innovative.

Looking for a more Bollywood way to fill a Christmas stocking or a funky present to gift? At 6.5 inches tall, I think you may just have found the best choice for this festive season!

Not Just Another SRK Bashing Fest....

Screw the open letters; that is so last month. This is an outright SRK bashing. I’m really not a fan of King Khan and I have no qualms in saying it. In fact, the only reason I watch his films is because I am a sadist; I look for reasons to hate on Shah Rukh Khan. I can count the number of SRK films I liked—Swades, Chak De! India and fine, I’ll even grant him Veer Zaara. And I’m not talking about old school SRK; he died ages ago. We’ll never see the Raj in DDLJ ever again so don’t count on it. But why does he choose to be such a bloody gaada? Like seriously, why? The last time I was this pissed off at SRK was after I watched one disaster of a film better known as Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. I literally sat in complete shock when I saw SRK switch between being foolish as part the nerdy light dude and even more foolish as the dancing garagewallah

And now, after I watch Ra.One, over a week late, I feel a sense of déjà vu falling over me. But before I go off about the film, here's what the film's blurb reads when you look it up:

A father trying hard to 'fit-in' in his son's badass world. A son trying hard to 'dude-up' his dad from 'aiiiyyyo' to 'Yo!' And a mother lost in translation between her husband's 'ingeva' and her son's 'inn'it!' While Shekhar was trying every trick in the book to woo his son, get 'dude-ified' and 'up his coolness quotient' his son had given up on him.

Can I barf now? All of a sudden, I am that angry girl all over again who cannot fathom what the frak Ra.One was about. But why am I so surprised? I knew he’d kill it with Ra.One. I knew it would be a piece of crap. I knew I’d be sitting and cursing myself out because as usual SRK would make something over the top that would as usual, not make sense.

See, I have no issues with experimental cinema. In fact, I applaud it. Variety is the spice of life and all that jazz, but for heaven’s sake, please make sense. Watching Ra.One proved to be the most daunting, boring, infuriating experiences of 2011. However, I’m going to pull an SRK on you and do something that is expected but not really. See, you expect me to hate on SRK and Ra.One. But since a certain ‘someone’ (you know who you are) insists that I should not be a SRK hater; here are all the reasons to watch Ra.One.

Bebo’s Chammak Challo chiffon sari. She herself is oomph personified but add a sexy red sari to Bebo, and you pretty much have a number one reason to watch Ra.One. Of course, the song too is pretty darn cool, kudos Akon, but really it’s Kareena Kapoor’s latkas and jhatkas that really make you feel like you’ve got your money’s worth. Can’t say the same about your time though.

The kid’s hair. I understand that young boys like the Bieber inspired do. Apparently, it’s in. And the reason you should watch Ra.One is because besides being slightly annoying, the kid in the film is basically India’s answer to Justin Bieber. Well, not sure if he can sing, but he is sporting the look for sure. I, however, couldn’t stop thinking about how badly I wanted to chop his long locks. Alternatively, he could use some gel to work some pretty cool styles. A Mohawk even.

Raj-Ni. When the real king comes on screen, then ain’t no body gonna look at any G.One aka SRK. Even though he was barely on for more than 2.5 seconds, Rajni ruled and rocked.

Dahi-Chowmein. I've never heard of that combination coming together. Very Chandni Chowk to China inspired if I may say so, but this is yet another reason to watch Ra.One. While initially fusing noodles and curd would sound rather unappetizing, I think SRK may actually be onto something here. Worth a try, no?

Arjun in 10. Thank your lucky stars cause all you get of Arjun Rampal is a mere ten minutes. But then again, that is ten solid minutes; painful minutes. And in the climax you are treated to ten Ra.One's, i.e. 10 Arjun Rampals. But fikaar not, it's better than a whole film with Rampal as the main hero. As for all those girls who couldn't stop gushing over how "hot" he looked, I'm sorry but I beg to differ. I'll take a bald Anupam Kher over a taklu Rampal anyday.

The Game Over sign. After the torture, the Game Over sign is an indication that the end is near. Praise the lord.

Tum Bin Effect. And the last reason to watch Ra.One is because you’ll appreciate Anubhav Sinha’s Tum Bin; if you didn’t already. It was a rona dona film, yes. But it’s a better film than Ra.One, I’ll tell you that.

Oh and while we're at it, just a quick piece of FYI. SRK or rather Anubhav Sinha, has no idea what a superhero is. Superman, Batman, Iron Man all had one factor in common: they were regular people. It's only when terror struck that they changed avatars and became their titled superhero. Ra.One was not a real person and thus, he is a Robot. He even displayed robotic tendencies! So how on earth then is this a superhero flick? No, tell me please.

As for SRK, you haven’t seen the end of him or his Ra.One series. From the looks of it, we will be hit with a second part which he will promote bigger and better than his first part; which we’ll watch and yes, I’ll find reasons to watch that one too.

No Hate SRK

I am NOT a Shah Rukh Khan hater! Phew! Over the last week or so, I've been putting up links to what various people have said regarding the SRK Detention situ along with my five pence worth of input. However, this has led some people to believe that I dislike the actor-superstar. Not at all! SRK is pretty cool for the most part -- I liked him in Swades, Veer Zaara and Chak De India! I'm not fond of him in over the top roles like Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and the likes of that, but hey! He sells just as much as sex does. So once again, I am not a hater but then again, I ain't no SRK patriot either. Talented and hardworking for sure -- there is no denying that. SRK not only pulls in crowds by the millions but manages to keep them on their toes at shoes and events too.

A friend recently said to me she wasn't an SRK fan until she met him. Apparently he is one of the most charismatic men who quickly attracts you and makes you a fan for life. Perhaps I need to meet him to become a die-hard fan. Until then, SRK can attempt to impress me with his gimmicks -- oh sorry, SRK doesn't need gimmicks. Fine then, he can attempt to impress me with his massive acting talent and some better intelligent roles.

But like I said -- no hatred for this Khan. None at all.

Standing Up for the Regular Khans

Sometimes I really believe that the Indian media has nothing better to make a big deal about. We have an out of control Swine Flu epidemic circling the country, a unending drought, pending answers from Pakistan regarding the 26/11 catastrophe and yet the biggest news that is making the rounds is Shah Rukh Khan being detained for two hours by US immigration. Goodness gracious! Okay so he was detained and? What is the big deal? Numerous, countless amounts of Muslims are stopped by the US immigration on a daily basis, and are subject to terrible amounts of questioning without any privileges and get no media coverage. But the minute a self-proclaimed superstar is detained, he is expected to receive special treatment! Why? The Indian Embassy is called, he is verified as being THE Shah Rukh Khan, comes out and claims he was "humiliated." Where is the Indian embassy when other innocent Indian's are detained for hours on end? It doesn't make news nor do they come forward to claim that clearly US immigration needs better guidelines as to when and who is stopped. So why now? Simply because he is a celebrity? Not acceptable. The same treatment should be extended to everyone who is detained.

Let's look at things objectively. Suppose another SRK was mistaken for the "superstar" and let go. Let's say he goes on to be a part of some catastrophe ala 9/11, then who gets blamed? The U.S. Immigration. And then would have no qualms in claiming that a) they haven't learnt and b) that the have a biased and laxed immigration system.

Perhaps if the media stood up for every detained Khan like they are are for SRK, then US immigration would realize that there is a serious problem with the way they view all Muslims and especially those with the last name Khan. The same goes for all the politicians who are insisting on a "tit for tat" correction and even those celebrities who feel the situation is "disgraceful" or advise US Immigration to "Google SRK." Correctly so Salman Khan went on to state that it is NOT a big deal. The immigration officers were just doing their job and ensuring that they do not have to deal with another situation the size, or bigger, of 9/11.

Is the situation racist? Yes. There is no denying that. But it is a problem nearly all Muslims are dealing with and not just solely SRK. And as I have repeatedly claimed, why do we not create such hoopla then? Why only now? Shouldn't SRK been the bigger man? The actor should in fact claim that he understood the situation and that the US immigration officers were just doing their job? In fact he should have been more sympathetic towards fellow Muslims who are detained instead of literally asking for exclusive treatment. PR agents claim, h doesn't need the "gimmicks" so then let it go SRK. Such is life and we should all get used to this idea; this is the social norm now. Post 9/11 and 26/11 this is how the world runs. In fact if anyone's name is flagged, I would like them to be detained -- including myself. We are primarily interested in the safety of the country -- not in playing some dignitary competition. It is really on in India where we take full advantage of this "VIP" stature so much so that it has become a culture. SRK may be a VIP in India but outside the country, he is just as simple as everyone else.

I stand up for all those Khans whose story has NOT been told by the media. For those who have been detained, bags searched, questioned for hours on end and have received no help; not from the Indian Embassy, not from any politicians and certainly not from any celebrities. Shah Rukh Khan or not, no Khan deserves this treatment.

The One Where I Heart New York and IPL Drama

I love New York. Whats not to love? The busy streets, the fast pace, the insane partying, the fabulous life. I heart heart heart New York. But then, all good things must come to an end and I must head back west to suburban California where at 10 p.m. all you hear is the occasional fire siren and not the jarring music in the Meat Packing district. It's so incredible how all the different states in the U.S. can be so varied in life and culture. Manhattan is perhaps the most diverse. A single island houses people of all origins and cultures, filled with an incredible sights, and a quick lifestyle. Within a heartbeat you can be downtown dancing at a club and then head on uptown to an upscale Upper East Side stylish pad. Either way, Manhattan has an vibe that cannot be imitated or copied. It makes me realize how much of a city girl I am, how I need to be surrounded by noise and shor instead of a small city and mountains. I need to be running around, taking subways, making frantic calls on my cell, utilizing my BlackBerry to the maximum and being 26! Definitely more NYC on the travel list for me this year. New York New York New York - I love it!

On the otherhand, Shah Rukh Khan never fails to disappoint me more and more on a daily basis. This time, he has gone ahead and let the Australians dominate the Knight Riders. If rumors and newspapers are to be believed, the Australian players have made some some racial remarks towards the Indian players (?) Uhhh.... hello? Am I the only person who thinks this is incredibly silly? How can you discriminate in an INDIAN Premiere League? That is simply absurd. And of course, SRK refuses to comment. Duh! He has no say regarding his team who have no respect for him. Clearly, SRK does not know cricket and he should probably not dabble in it for a while.
