Fashion Fail: B-town ladies who messed it up!

There are those who are fashion forward. And then there are fashion fools. While the former know how to keep it chic and chick, the latter choose to pile it on and well, commit some of the most classic fashion faux pas known to mankind. Within the film industry they come in two groups: the stylish and the garish. The stylish, we mimic; the garish drive you ballistic. Here are some ladies who failed to get the: 'Please take a second look before you leave your house' memo and landed up looking, well, looking like this.

Kajol

She gave the fashion disaster world hope, she really did. But Kajol has proved that once a fashion victim, always a fashion victim. She's never really been one of the more stylish actresses around. In fact, she was branded as an actress with zero style quotient and we had made our peace with it. 'At least she can act,' we told ourselves. And then 2012 she came out ready to rock the fashion world. Then this happens. At the recent GQ Men's Award, Kajol turned up, husband by her side in a silver Prabal Gurung dress looking well, odd. The dress fit awkwardly around her body making her look wider while the length of her gown exposed her legs and ghastly shoes. We'd much rather see her in classic ethic wear which she manages to carry off with finesse.

Bipasha Basu

For an actress who has such a hot bod, Bipasha Basu sure got it wrong with a Shrivan-Narresh sari. First and foremost, the color palette didn't work for the dusky beauty and all that skin show, which was supposed to make her look like a Kama Sutra model, we believe, made her look vulgar instead. While the bikini blouse normally looks flattering on svelte actresses like herself, it just didn't work for Bips. The thin straps made her shoulders look broader and sari itself looked like a bed sheet. Add to that a dated hairstyle and someone please call fashion police!

Rani Mukerji

So I guess for Rani, it was convenience meets fashion, i.e. night wear meets sleep wear. Ms. Mukerji turned up to best bud Karan Johar's birthday bash in a silver unfitted gown which could have easily doubled as a night gown. Not only did she look incredibly bulky, but there was nothing relatively good about her look. Even the deep back couldn't help sex up her outfit. And that awful up do make her look a lot older. Sadly her career and fashion sense are in need of help, pronto!

Shenaz Treasuryvala

If you're not a well known actress and you are limited on the work you do, shouldn't you really be more cautious about your sense of style at least? You'd think Shenaz Treasuryvala would be a bit smarter with her choice of clothing in hopes to bag a film or two. But instead, she gives us a drabby take on a cut out top and an unnecessarily striped skirt. And what is up with those awful wedges? No, no, no, Shenaz! We know you like to keep it sexy, but this is trashy.

Ekta Kapoor

She may be the queen of soaps but she sure doesn't have the fashion sense of one. Where do we even begin with Ekta Kapoor? Whether it's her wretched choice of shoes - those chunky platforms slippers, which follow her everywhere, or her choice of clothes which no one really gets, it's just fashion mayhem for the savviest Kapoor in town. Normally, most of the rather awkwardly fashioned ladies in Bollywood seem to get it right with their ethnic wear. Not Ekta. She fails in that department too. It's rather sad though, she does have a pretty face.

It's fine if you want to do be different to make a fashion statement, but ladies, the only reason you should be dressing this way is if you're starring in a Ram Gopal Varma horror film. Which none of you are…are you?

Filmy Fashion Files: Current Trends!

Being a fashionista in Bollywood is hardly a task for our A-listed actresses; it’s a way of life. Whether they’re spotted at the airport, at big industry dos or even at charity events, they’re dressed to kill…and ready to be clicked by the media who cannot seem to get enough of them. Not only do they follow trends, they create them too. This season, they seem to be accessorizing and sporting clothes of different styles and prints. And if you’re looking for some fashion inspiration, here’s your low down!

While the city of Mumbai doesn’t seem to have autumn as a season, our Bollywood stars are not ones to stay too far behind in keeping up with fall trends. The first of which is the scarf. Whether it’s short or long, silk or wool, Bollywood loves this accessory right now. Gauri Khan was spotted wearing hubby SRK’s skulled out scarf while Kareena Kapoor, who is rarely spotted devoid of a scarf, takes to longer, chunkier ones. Styling and scarf tying, is totally at random, of course. While some choose to go fancy, chic or bohemian, others prefer a more casual “tossed-around-my-neck” look.

Another accessory that seems to be making it to the ramp and at events is the chunky neck pieces. But there is trick to wearing neck wear of this caliber: keep the outfit simple. Check out how the actress of the moment, Sridevi, keeps her green dress to a complete minimum while she pairs it with a beaded necklace. And if you’re going to opt for even more solid colors, add a pop of color to your neck with your neck piece to add that extra oomph ala Kangna Ranaut to make a statement.

The dhoti pant has come a long way in Indian fashion. But it’s only now that it has been westernized and styled enough also, to make it a fashionable to sport at events and parties. Whether it’s Priyanka Chopra or Chitrangada Singh, they all seem to be donning the dhoti in a variety of colors, prints and lengths even. Add a pair of heels or some good old fashioned mojaaris, and you’re good to go.

It doesn’t look like bright lips are going anywhere, anytime soon. Whether it’s the dusky Bipasha Basu or the porcelain skinned Kareena Kapoor, they all seem to finding bright pinks and cherry reds to paint on their pouts. The key is to pick a color that suits your personality and skin too.

When it comes to footwear this season, our Bollywood celebs will keep themselves heeled but studded too. The rocker look seems to be dominating their feel this season as they will be spotted with metallic studs of all shapes and sizes scattered all over their shoes. But it’s Deepika Padukone who’s rocking it out in her studded heels on this month’s Vogue cover. You can expect the rest of the actresses to follow suit right about….now.

I Wear India!

Since I sadly do not reside in India, I find myself gravitating towards anything that's everything that is Indian. I wear India. Literally. The idea of staying close to home works best for me when I adorn something Desi. It varies with what I'm wearing of course, but as the Desiest Desi girl ever, I choose to daily wear something that's Indian. No, I don't wear fancy outfits - c'mon, you can be Indian without wearing a dupatta daily. It's all about accessorizing, matching your jeans and tees with a little something-something that makes you want to bust a thumka to Desi Girl. More recently, after my sister came back from her trip where she shopped big time for moi, I found myself abundantly . Take a look and what's been going on with me and how I wear my Indianness!

I love a good pair of kohlapuri chappals!

Lord knows I need as much peace (Om)
as I can get in my life!

How hot are these? Love 'em!

Indo-Spring Fashion 2011: A to Z Guide

D is for Daring Lena Ka!

If you’re one to conform, then really this season, your fashion mantra should be to keep it different. Dare to be zara hatke if you will. If you’re one who normally keeps it subtle, change your palette bright with dhinchak fabrics that scream a new you. Remember, youngistan is all about being distinctive. They challenge the status quo. Keep in mind that you’ll be looked at – but who doesn’t want some attention, hai na?
Bollywood belts for the filmy ones!
Change up your hair, your accessories, your look, your style. Keep it cool, casual and yet desi; it is possible to do all believe it or not. Slip on some traditional jeans and pair it with some loose sheer tops, add a couple of bangles, a pair of kohlapuris, add a funky bag, and voila, you’re ready to face spring 2011 in the most Indo-cool of ways. Remember, no one likes to follow the crowd. Daring Lena Ka Bhai!

C is for Churiyaans

Spring churiyaans (bangles, cuffs et all) are colorful this season. Whether they’re chunky cuffs or single slim bangle sets, they’re embellished with gems, rhinestones and colors. Most of the collections you’ll see will be set in metals – gold, silver and copper. But because you’ll soon find out that this season, other accessories will be smaller, this will allow for louder bangles and bracelets this spring. In fact, you overload up with bangles as you pile them up your arm in different styles, colors and textiles even. With lace being the fabric of the season, many bangles will be adorned with lace in all different colors. As for sizes, go large or small, thin or wide; whatever your choice, rock your wrists this spring. And while you do, remember what Priyanka Chopra rightly lip-synced, “Meri churi, mera kangna, yaad aayega tujhko sajnaa.” Wear 'em, so they'll remember 'em.

B is for Band Baaja Baaraat

Anita Dongre: LFW 2011
Looking to get shaadified this spring? For heaven’s sake, please avoid excessive bling! It is so 2000 and late. This spring, your trousseau should scream pastels, bright colors, fun fabrics and a lack of unwarranted embellishment. Let your wedding glow shine through as you pick fabrics that are young and uncomplicated. You’re looking at nudes and sheers with flowers – marigolds and jasmines, fun bangles, funky earrings and light-weight dupattas. Keep the clothes simple yet chic and enjoy your wedding. Hair is loose and make up, natural. But really, it’s not about keeping regal and elegant. Na jee, na. This wedding season, keep it dhinchak, janakpuri ka khanjar ala Band Baaja Baaraat.

Indo-Spring Fashion 2011: A to Z Guide

A is for Abhi Toh Main Jawaan Hoon

This season being Indo-fashionable is all about being young. India today is all about the yuva (youth) and when it comes to fashion, this is exactly what spring 2011 is screaming. As we continue through the alphabet, you'll quickly realize that this season, the fashion is young in color, style and fabrics. But more than anything else, it's important to display your personality as one that is "young at heart". Wear it fun, fresh and freak out with your fashion this spring and summer. Indo-cool is the new big thing but it is also vernal and active. In fact, if you talk to fashionably senior Indians, you'll get a hipper vibe from them than younger India. So this spring, keep it jawaan irrespective of your age!

Go Indo this spring!

A big box arrived last week with goodies from India for me courtesy of my sister and grandmother. As I emptied out the contents, I found myself elated with joy when some great Indian spring clothes, shoes and accessories came pouring out. There is nothing like an Indian spring/summer and so I thought it would rather fun to put together a small guide to going Indo this spring in the form of an A to Z guide in my "Indo-Ishtyle" section. Keeping all things Indian, this guide will work as your go-to if you're looking to keep it easy, fresh, modern and yet Indian this spring - much like myself. Keep it locked right here as the fashionista in me erupts Indian ishtyle!

Mirch Masala

With so much going on in the news, I figured it would be a good idea to give you guys a bit of this, a dash of that and pinch of everything; thus, Mirch Masala.

And if we're talking spicy, then Bipasha Basu is as hot as they get. But the normally incredibly smart girl has a rather odd reason for not wanting to get married. Are you ready for this? She doesn't like to get dressed up and naturally would need to over-deck for her own shaadi. Erm... considering we've seen the actress really doll up on screen, this one is a really strange reason for not wanting to get married! And if I was getting married to John Abraham, I'd find no reason not to get married.

Poor Nysa Devgn, that's Kajol and Ajay's daughter. The young girl managed to somehow convince Dad to take her to Disney this summer only for him to cancel. With Kajol preggers and unable to travel, it was going to be a Father-Daughter week away but work came in the way and poor Nysa is finding herself stuck at home all summer.

Priyanka Chopra has come out to finally reveal what kind of man she wants: "I like the male chauvinist Punjabi." Much like all of us, P.C.'s ideal man has been distorted by Bollywood films. She wants a guy who will fight tooth-and-nail for her and called herself a "complete drama-momma". Either way, she isn't looking to settle down anytime soon -- five years from now is when she would like to indulge in holy matrimony. Now looking at her track record, all her ex-beaus have been pure bred Punjabis: Harman Baweja, Shahid Kapoor and even Akshay Kumar (does he count?). Hmmm... perhaps she is hinting at one of these men as a prospective husband?

Oh and lastly, India Couture Week has moved from Mumbai to Delhi. And of course, it is creating much drama! Some designers are not going, others are upset for other reasons -- you know how the fashion world works: Drama-Rama galore! Either way, I'm excited to see some outrageous designs from some of the best in the country. And and and I will be keeping a close eye on the front row to see which celebs come out to support the designs.
