High Off Hong Kong!

Welcome to Hong Kong— where time is a commodity and 24 hours fall far too short especially if you need to fit in work, sleep and play. Sometimes, you find yourself wishing for just one more hour. In fact, if you live in Hong Kong, you should by default be allocated 36 hours. It should be the law. That said, the mere fact that we find 24 hours short puts you in this amazing feel of euphoria. The speed, madness and frantic rush gives you the ultimate adrenaline high. It’s such a fabulous high, that you can’t imagine yourself without it once you’re addicted. Yes, it is a drug to certain degree.

It’s been seven months since I’ve been back and I don’t think I’ve had a dull moment. From getting lost almost 100 times – yes I get lost in Hong Kong, to crazy nights out, rekindling with my old friends whom I now realize, I missed so much to making such amazing new friends, celebrating my 30th and today, I’ll be getting my Sindhi on as I attend a Chetti Chand mela. It’s really no wonder I haven’t had a minute to blog in the last one month. But honestly, this is how life should be; crazy, fun, busy and filled with great memories.

So I celebrated my 30th birthday last weekend. Yes, 30 years of living on this planet. Where did time go? I remember all my milestone birthdays—18, 21, 25. All very big bashes. My birthday, for some odd reason, has always been a big deal in my family. Dad says, first child; Mom says the same; my sister and brother are not so big on theirs so they vicariously celebrate through me, I guess. And I of course, love it! My 30th was incredible fun! But that’s Hong Kong for you. A place where everyone gets together and celebrates for every reason…sometimes no reason too!

I’ve never been one to live a somber quiet life; this is a new realization, of course. I did it for close to a decade. My poor adrenaline; it accumulated and has now burst after many years of dormancy. And while I’ll complain that I’m so busy and incredibly overwhelmed, I love it. I love every minute of being here. I’m home. Now, I know, I am. And I have no intentions of leaving any time soon.

Here’s to me, my adrenaline rush and 30 more years of fobulousness!

The Bow-Down-to-Sachin Post!

Tournament: Asia Cup
Venue: Sharjah, UAE
Date: April 9th, 1995

The Men in Blue were playing Sri Lanka…while I was
shaadi shopping for my mamu’s wedding.

Shaadi shopping is never fun when you’re thirteen. In fact, when you’d much rather be out playing dog-and-the-bone with your building friends, it is by far one of the most exasperating situations. With a grouchy face, I dragged myself around Bombay city trying to understand why a thirteen-year-old needed to come shopping for a wedding especially since all my clothes were already bought. But as we traveled from store to store, I found myself rather intrigued by the lack of productivity that was occurring at these dhukans. Quickly, I realized that sari shop attendants were swamped around television sets. It was only when a customer walked in that they forcefully diverted their attention to serving you. As my mother tried what was easily her 100th sari, I found myself curious. “What’s going on?” I remember asking my father, who was equally as bored but refused to let it be shown on his face. “Cricket,” my father said, “Cricket is happening.” With zero knowledge, I decided I’d take a peek at this sport. And at that very minute, it really happened. Sachin Tendulkar walked onto the field and the rest, as they say, is history.

My introduction to cricket was because of a bored experience, but it became a passion because of apna Master Blaster. It took me time to grasp the sport one hundred percent but this particular game is etched in my mind because of the 10dulkar. I vividly remember him walking out to the wicket and while the sari shopwallahs explained to Baby Roshni how the game worked, Sachin was playing an incredible knock. They cheered at every boundary he hit and while I dashed in and out of stores realizing that Sachin would hit a century, which I learned was a huge deal. And as my mother tried on her last sari, which she did buy praise the lord, Sachin, who was at 99 at the previous store, scored his 100th run. For the first time, I saw myself looking at this man in complete awe. But it didn’t end there, Tendlya went to finish off the game, 125 not out.

Not only did I become a fanatic, from that day on, but perhaps one of Sach’s biggest fans. And I have no qualms in admitting that I am biased towards Tendulkar. Irrespective of how many runs he scores, he does it the best. Out on 5? Best of the 5 runs in the game, I say. Whenever I find myself at loggerheads with non-India team players, I find myself jutting out Sachin’s name and silence falls upon the argument. Sachin always wins. Sachin always rocks. Sachin always gets the loudest roars and cheers.

It’s not just his game which I simply can’t get enough of. Yes, he hits those amazing cover drives which make you sigh as you view perfection. But as a Sachin fan, it’s the experience of watching the maestro hit a 100. At 99, your heart beats at a pace that is unfathomable. But watching him raise his bat as he runs the 100th run, peace falls over you. You have witnessed a piece of art, the finest.

It’s the man’s birthday on April 24th, and I have no words to explain how much I simply adore him. It’s respect to the maximum, devotion of the utmost. And so on the occasion of his 38th birthday, I just want to bow in front of the man who has taught me that ainvayi people are successful but the sachi (truly) most successful ones are those who are grounded and humble. Those who follow their dreams with a true heart and those who display passion in all they do. I salute you, oh great one. The Master, the Blaster, the God, the Slashin, 10dulkar, we love you. Tum jeeyo hazaaron saal, yeh meri hai arzoo. Happy Birthday to you!

Rani Mukherjee on Turning 30!

Rani Mukherjee may not always be my favorite actress, but she is definitely a good actress. At her best, she really can steal the limelight from the best. She made her comeback with No One Killed Jessica and on the onset, made an impression. Personally, I loved her in the film because of her depiction as a feisty journalist looking to make a difference. R.M. (yes, I'm biased towards her because she shares my intials!) turned another year old this year and instead of giving a bashan on how we can be better people, she went on to give advice to young ladies under the age of 30. Titled "What You Should Do Before 30 by Rani Mukherjee", check out her top 10 things to do before you reach the Big 3 along with my comments.

Rani Says: "Do something physically adventurous: One should always take risks when you are in your twenties or when you are a teenager. But take risks that does not ruin or harm you. I have for the longest time been thinking of doing deep sea diving and even sky diving and it’s my aim that I will do it soon. I’m a total water baby and I love anything to do with water. I’m just waiting for the right time to plan and do sea diving and have a super experience doing it. So, all of you who haven’t done things that are adventurous go for it now."

Roshni Says: This piece of advice I completely agree with. Look, life is short and if you don't get out and do something dare devilish, then basically you really haven't lived. As they say, " If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space." Now if only Rani would tell us which Extreme Sport she's indulged in, eh?

Rani Says: "Be at the top of your game: You need to be at the top of your game when you are in your 30s for sure. So, plan well and take your chances. 30s should shape how your life will be so that you can enjoy your 40s or 50s but for that you need to push yourself the hardest in your 20s. But hey, make sure you balance your life well. All work and no play makes anyone dull. I didn’t even realise when I touched 30 because right through my 20s I was working so hard and travelling so much. But it’s definitely been worth it."
Roshni Says: Agree again. So many times we get so bogged down with being successful that I forget that life is also about living. I'm at that point in my life but that doesn't mean I don't want to sit and enjoy everything else around me. So now, I take out time for myself every weekend to just sit and do things I wouldn't have time for otherwise...even if it's just cleaning my closet!

Rani Says: "Go on a all-girl/boy vacation: Any country. Any city. Being with same sex group is always somehow more fun. So, definitely go for one and have a blast. When you settle down, these things are difficult to you to do. So, before you turn 30 – unwind and travel a lot. Though I have travelled a lot, I didn’t get to enjoy the cities as much as I would have wanted to because I was constantly working."
Roshni Says: I never got a chance to do this courtesy of my committments to work and so on. However, this advice I will take heed to. I do agree with her "same sex is fun" angle. It's always a blast with the girls!

Rani Says: "Know yourself: Know what you want in life and get it too. There is no point in knowing what you can achieve and don’t do it. Know your strengths, weakness, and accept yourself unconditionally. Know who are the people in your life that matter, and be able to spot a fake from a mile away. Have enough self-love to avoid and break off unhealthy friendships and relationships."

Roshni Says: This virtue takes time to learn. It has taken me years to finally love myself and believe that I am not worth anyone's nonsense. In fact only now do I finally recognize where my strengths and weaknesses lie and I love myself..Just.The.Way.I.Am.

Rani Says: "Do volunteer work: This is very important and I think that every person must do some sort of voluntary work. Doing small things for others makes me feel good. I think we are all born to help each other out. Have a cause in which you believe. Improving your world, make it a better place to live in not just for you but also for others."

Roshni Says: So true. I don't feel I give back enough. This change will happen.

Rani Says: "A healthy relationship with your parents: It is very important to have a great relationship with parents because no matter what it is only your parents that you can completely fall back upon every single time. You cannot ever repay your parents for what they have done for you, so don’t try to ever do that. Be respectful and always grateful. Their love for us is unconditional and it should be vice versa."

Roshni Says: Can't agree more. I couldn't be more thankful for such great parents and the relationship I have with them now.

Rani Says: "Have a bank balance: Definitely at 30 you should have a bank balance to live life and pamper yourself so in your 20s work hard to rest on your laurels. By 30, you should’ve saved up for a hefty fund and put away a sizeable chunk away. Hopefully you have been saving up every month, and investing it wisely. get your dream home, own your dream car."

Roshni Says: Agree x 1000. Please read the above ladies, that is some solid advice.

Rani Says: "Have your heartbroken: Falling out of love is just as important as falling in love. You have to do the entire ritual. It has happened to me and it has made me wiser. So, definitely don’t be afraid of falling in love in your 20s even if your heart breaks into pieces. At 30 one should never have a heart break."
Roshni Says: Guessing Rani is referring to all her broken relationships (Abhishek, Govinda et al) but this is also very true. I always tell every young boy and girl that until they haven't had their heart broken, they'll never understand what real love is. It's a grand experience.

Rani Says: "Fall truly deeply, madly in love: I don’t think there’s a right age of falling in love so yes strike this off from your wishlist. You can fall in love madly and deeply at any age but be wise to know that it is love and not lust which burns away and leave you with nothing."
Roshni Says: I think Rani also forgot to add that you should "fall truly, madly, deeply in love" with the right person! Being in love is a fab feeling so enjoy it and bask in the glory if you've found the right man.

Rani Says: "Lose your virginity: If you still haven’t, it’s already too late. So, before you turn 30, if you feel right, lose it but only with the right guy because it is also all about feeling love."
Roshni Says: Don't know about this one. And it's ranked as her number one piece of advice too. Hmm... I don't think there is a set age to lose your virginity by. Erm...my advice is lose it to someone you are sure you don't mind thinking back (if God forbids things go sour) not feeling icky about giving it up to them. Love would be nice but sometimes, it's hormonal. And I guess that works too!

It's My Happy Birthday!

Okay, it's not really my birthday, but this month would mark my 2nd year in the world of writing. And since, everything has a birth day and an expiration day for that matter, it is only fair that I deem October the birthday of my writing career. So Happy Birthday to my Writing Career!! What's most interesting is how much it's matured over time. Yes, in a span of two years, I've managed to do a lot of great work for some great publications. Some have gained me grand accolades, achievements I could have only dreamed of and the opportunity to chat/meet with such amazing people. When I began, I had no idea what direction it would take. Would I even get chances? Who would want to hire me, I don't even have a degree in journalism. The skeptic in me asked these questions many a times. And it wasn't a piece of chocolate cake either. I had to work hard to ask for chances and opportunities. By the grace of God, I was given chance after chance and before I knew it, I was building a reputation.

Two years later, things are different. And while I am banking on them getting better, I couldn't be happier with where I've reached. No longer do I need to struggle for a chance to write or to pitch an idea. And while I have had days where I wanted to throw in the towel, I found myself remembering a few lines I heard from Zoya Akhtar in an interview. She said, "Success is not about compromise. Its about going for it. You have to keep doing what you do and hang in there. You have to hone your crafy. And you have to be with good people." I found myself completely inspired by her ideals. With time and in retrospect, I now realize it was all so worth it. Yes, it's been a rollercoaster but I would do it all over again...and again. It took hard work but I've never been a believer of luck. If you work hard enough, opportunities come your way.

So on the occasion of my "birthday" I would like to thank everyone who has supported me, given me a chance and has been there when the going was tough. And to all of you who have been coming back to read my random thoughts on my blog, cheers! You've all been real pals.

Here's to two fabulous years and many more amazing years ahead!

The Big 2-7 Hits!!

I turn all of 27 today! I think I'm most surprised that I managed to survive so many years. Here I am 27, alive and sane to a certain extent. They say (who is this "they", I often wonder) that it is a great age to turn filled with changes. I sure as heck hope so! Thus far, 2010 has been challenging. The universe and God have tested me on levels that are virtually impossible to comprehend. My dreams and aspirations, a chance at finally pursuing them, were shot down and postponed for another 365 days. And pretty much a whole range of issues which went from complicated to challenging and complicated. However, amidst the chaos came a chance for change - I'm beginning to sound like Obama now. But it has come. A change in me, my life, my independence, my home even. No one likes changes but in my case, it is welcomed and how. I need it more than anyone else because of the stagnant manner in which my life seems to be running.

I'm a firm believer in subliminal signs from God and the universe. Lately, they've been giving me loads in various forms indicating that a change is on the horizon. Anyway, all I want this year is for peace and clarity in my life in all forms; my career, relationships and in all situations I find myself in. So you can guess what I'll be wishing for when I blow out my candles. This year, I would much rather sit with a big slice of cake in front of the television but of course, that isn't going to happen. Instead, I'll be at a noisy Spanish restaurant -- mind you the food is amazing. But I will find some time to myself (much needed) to just sit and ponder over my coming year.

On a side note, I know I often complain about my teaching job but it has its days when you can't help but realize how fulfilling of a job it is. Today I received an adorable birthday card from a student whose name translates as "Hymn" and it read:

Dear Roshni, Happy Birthday! You are the best teacher that I ever met. You always love to help everyone when they need it and that is what makes you so special. When you help people, it is like a blessing from God and that is a blessing that you should never forget. You create so many connections to people and that is one lesson I learned from you. I am honored to be your student every time I walk through your door. I thank you for being my tutor, a friend and mentor in my life. Your student, G*y*t*r*

How can you not feel special with a note like that?

So its my birthday! And this year I am going to wish myself everything I wish everyone else; with God's choicest blessings, good luck, love, health and everything my heart desires. May I have a great year ahead! Happy Birthday to Me!!!

** All the photos are from my birthdays down the years! Nostalgia hit me this year majorly!!
