Who and Why?

It's always hard to sit and think about what to say about yourself. Okay, who am I? Well, I'm a freelance writer on the path to big things, or so I believe at least. I'm also a blogger for the sheer passion of it and at the heart of it all, I'm just a good gal who wants to get famous. There, I said it. It's never easy to really admit that you want to be famous, or a tad bit at least but hello, at least I'm honest. What I love most about blogging is the informality of it all. Anyone whose no one can be a blogger. Ultimately, that is how I started my writing career. From just blogging, I managed to bag one, then two and then heaps of writing offers from prestigious publications all over the world. Strangely, when I first emailed and asked around for one chance, just one chance, to write, I was quickly told, "No vacancies" or "Sorry, your lack of experience really doesn't work for us". Finally, I was given that make or break opportunity. After working really hard on two profiles I had to cover, I finally bagged a freelance position at ELLE India. Immediately after, I found things simply rolling my way without having to ask too much. Today, I really enjoy writing anything and everything that is thrown my way.

However, while I may know a lot about an area I know very little about in the world of modern journalism, immediately it hit me: Social Media. In a day and age where Social Media can make or break your online persona, it was really sad to believe that I had such limited knowledge about it. That explains why I am here!

Wow, inspiring that you took the initiative and it worked out so well!! By chance do you have any of your work on ELLE India online or else another blog you write on?

This is inspiring. I am hoping to do the same. How did you get your first break? I have started writing my own lifestyle/fashion blog and have had designers send me things and people have done quick interviews, but I have not yet been paid for it - which is fine since it's more of a personal endeavor. But I would like to break into doing freelance work I just don't know how to go about getting my foot in the door. So any advice that you'd be willing to share would be great!

One quote I like about writing that I teach my English students: "Writing is compulsory thought."

And when you practice and practice that "compulsory thought" you develop expertise, which is of value to many -- hence the writing gigs.

Great going Champa.

Now regarding "journalism": How do you think what you typically write is different than journalism.

Also one hint, which I will be posting on our Facebook page: To get more comments, a common practice is to end your post with a question.
:-)

As Vanessa Jensen said, it was very inspiring all information you posted. Also i do agree about the part of being honest because you are waiting to be famous. I thought that it was funny, when i read it. But maybe you are right. People want to be famous.

That is an interesting post, particularly about how blogging led to better things. I think many journalists think of bloggers as the enemy and we are on the same side! Keep up the good work and good luck becoming 'famous'.

Thanks everyone! It's been 2 years since I decided to embark in the world of journalism. I think one thing that has changed me however, is the passion factor. For me, it just increased by the minute. I'm always scouting for new ideas to pen especially in my own real life! Via Social Media, I've been able to meet like-minded people (all of you included) which is so helpful especially since I come from a culture where in your late 20's marriage (or getting hitched) becomes the center of your universe. I'm almost defying society by focusing on my career. I do hope it all works out. Fingers crossed!
