Social Media: Live it; Learn it!

The need for us, journalists, to understand Social Media simply because it is the future of journalism. As viewers, we've become accustomed to construed opinions of news. What we hear is what they - newsreporters and newschannels, want us to hear. However, Social Media has changed that. No more is any opinion objective. We get to hear the more subjective side of events and situations. Via a number of Social Media sites, we are able to understand and see another side to real time news.

For journalists, Social Media is now emerging as an important platform from which journalists are able to report as they see it immediately. There are number of tools and strategies which need to be used to really allow yourself to fully utilize Social Media not only to bring in readers to what you may pen but allowing them to follow your thoughts regularly.

Understanding and acknowledging the need for Social Media for journalists is incredibly important. The problem is that most journalists are used to the more traditional ways of communicating their news. This is a new pseudo way which  really needs to be utilized for a number of reasons.

Could you explain what you mean by 'new pseudo way'? I agree with your point, as soon as starting this class I realized how important and relevant Social Media is now.

@ Miller: By pseudo, I mean a new technique that is rather contemporary. I think the idea of anything being pseudo is rather misconstrued unfortunately. A pseudo concept is never really bad if it is utilized correctly and misused. Social Media is generally a pseudo idea which is THE future .

I find it interesting that you bring up the point that journalists can allow readers to follow their thoughts regularly. Maybe it's just me being someone who will read the news but not really pay attention to the writer. Let us say that this journalist had a known twitter page, would you follow that journalist? Even if their thoughts are different from what their job is, which is to report news to people.

@Champa got it crystal clear! Thanks for explaining, and for the ELLE link on the other article too. :D

@Susana just to throw my hat in, if I had a journalist who articles I often read and respected then sure, I'd follow them on Twitter. Being a person who I trusted for news, I'd be interested in their opinion and just daily thoughts.

I was wondering that, too.

I agree with you Miller. I think if a journalist is credible, then you would follow them. For example, I absolutely adore Christiana Amanpour and her sensibilities as a journalist. To me she's not biased or subjective. Thus, I follow her on Twitter and all her work closely. But what rocks about her the most is that she is always honest with her reporting and she's always on the look out for information within the locals. So her thoughts and opinions work for me personally.
